Aeroplan participants will lose their miles if they have neither earned nor redeemed points in over a year. The points can be reinstated, but there’s a cost of $30 plus 1 cent per restored mile, but few people will do this. Aeroplan is also dating miles earned as they will now expire seven years after the month in which they’re earned.

Aeroplan participants who were trying to save miles for a once-in-a-lifetime trip are the most hurt by this new policy, especially if they accumulate miles slowly. These are the people who have lots of unused miles but aren’t planning any travel soon enough to accomplish the redeeming or earnings of points that is needed to keep their Aeroplan accounts active.
